UNSC OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALIZATIONS

Career generation in Halo: Roleplay Evolved uses the career rules presented in the Mongoose Traveller Core Rulebook, with minimal setting-specific modifications. Existing careers are used wherever possible, with changes made only where required to reflect the setting.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

This supplement follows three principles when adapting careers to the Halo setting:

  • Use existing Traveller rules whenever possible.
  • Rename or reinterpret before rewriting mechanics.
  • Add new rules only where Halo lore requires them.

Unless noted below, all careers, assignments, advancement rolls, events, mishaps, and benefits are used as written.

CAREER DESIGNATIONS

The following careers are renamed for this setting:

Core Rulebook CareerHalo Equivalent
ArmyUNSC Marine Corps
MarineOrbital Drop Shock Troopers (ODST)
NavyUNSC Navy

All associated mechanics remain unchanged.

UNSC Marine Corps

Use the Army career as written.

Orbital Drop Shock Troopers (ODST)

Use the Marine career as written.

UNSC Navy

Use the Navy career as written.

OTHER CORE CAREERS

Other Traveller careers may be used without modification where appropriate to the setting.

SPARTAN CAREER

A new career path is available:

Spartan

Unlike other careers, the Spartan career may not be selected during normal enlistment.

Entry into the Spartan career is possible only through exceptional circumstances.

Selection normally represents induction into the SPARTAN-IV program unless otherwise determined by the Referee.

If Qualification is successful proceed to the Spartan Branch Information page.

SPARTAN CANDIDACY

Whenever a Traveller rolls a natural 12 on either:

  • a Life Events roll, or
  • a Career Events roll

they may choose Spartan Candidacy instead of resolving the rolled event normally.

This represents identification and recruitment into Spartan Branch.

Qualification

To enter the Spartan career, make a qualification roll:

ANY CHARACTERISTIC 8+

Modifiers:

  • +1 if STR 8+
  • +1 if INT 8+
  • +1 if prior service in Marine Corps, ODST, Navy, Agent, or Scout

Success grants entry into the Spartan career next term.

FAILED CANDIDACY

If the qualification roll fails, the Traveller was considered but not selected.

Choose one:

  • Gain a Contact in Spartan Branch
  • Gain Athletics 0
  • Gain Gun Combat 0
  • Gain Recon 0

Then choose another career normally.

MILITARY ACADEMY ADJUSTMENTS

References to Army Academy become Marine Academy.

References to Marine Academy become ODST Academy.

Rules otherwise remain unchanged.

REFEREE GUIDANCE

Spartan characters are intended to be rare.

A natural 12 represents exceptional circumstances. Spartan candidacy should remain uncommon.

Most military characters in the setting should emerge from Marine, ODST, Navy, and related careers.

This reflects both balance considerations and established Halo lore.
